Frequently Asked Questions About Our 8-Inch Oak Cooking Logs
Is oak good for smoking?
Yes, oak is one of the best smoking woods available. Oak has a strong smoky flavor but won’t overpower your food. Even long smokes will not result in an overwhelming flavor from oak.
Do 8-inch oak logs work with offset smokers?
Yes, 8-inch logs are perfect for most offset smokers. 8-inch logs are often called “cooking splits” because they’re the perfect size for smokers and cooking on most wood-fire grills.
Will 8-inch logs work with my wood-burning stove?
Yes, 8-inch logs work well in wood-burning stoves, especially smaller wood-burning stoves. If you’re heating your home, we recommend using a long-burning firewood like oak, pinyon or hickory. Depending on the size of your wood-burning stove, you may find that 16-inch full-sized firewood works better than 8-inch wood.
Is oak hard to ignite?
Oak is usually one of the more difficult woods to ignite because of its high density. However, our kiln-dried oak wood has an extremely low moisture content, making it easier to ignite than most oak you’ll find on the market.
Still, we recommend using a natural fire starter or an easier-to-ignite wood like cedar to start a fire before adding oak wood.
What foods does oak smoke go well with?
Oak smoke pairs well with almost every meat and vegetable. It pairs best with beef and lamb but can pair well with almost anything.
